Since 2022, the University of Belgrade Faculty of Law has been cooperating with the UNHCR Representation in Serbia and the Department of International Refugee Law and Migration Law of the International Institute of Humanitarian Law of Sanremo, Italy in organizing the Specialists’ Course on International Refugee Law. The Department implements the Specialists’ Course in line with pledges made at the 2019 and 2023 Global Refugee Forums to support universities and training institutions in creating teaching initiatives in line with the Global Compact on Refugees.
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
THE SPECIALISTS’ COURSE PROGRAM
The Specialists’ Course on International Refugee Law covers the key aspects of the international protection of refugees. The topics will range from the analysis of international refugee law and its complementarity with other bodies of law to the different displacement phases. The causes that force people to flee, the protection risks encountered through the displacement cycle, and the search and implementation of durable and sustainable solutions will also be examined. Additional refugee-related issues, including topics of emerging importance, are further analyzed through a cross-cutting approach, such as gender-based violence and the protection of internally displaced and stateless people.

TARGET AUDIENCE
The Specialists’ Course is intended for master students and Ph.D. candidates in law from Serbia and the wider region, as well as young academics who teach refugee law at their universities or act as researchers on refugee issues.

OBJECTIVES
- Promote law, principles, and policies related to the international protection of refugees
- Develop a common understanding among participants on how legislation and policies can be promoted and implemented at the national level by a variety of stakeholders
- Raise awareness on the human rights issues faced by refugees and the need for durable solutions
- Enhance the skills of participants in developing and applying policies and standards in conformity with International Law
- Encourage a positive attitude among participants towards the protection of refugees and other uprooted people
